Bridger Bowl Ski Area
Bridger Bowl is Bozeman's home mountain, just 16 miles north of town, about a 25-minute drive. It's a community-owned, non-profit ski area, which keeps lift tickets noticeably cheaper than the big destination resorts while the terrain and snow quality hold their own against them.
The Ridge is what puts Bridger on the map for experienced skiers and riders, steep, hike-to terrain with some of the best inbounds expert lines in the country. Beginners and families are well covered too, with a dedicated learning area separate from the main mountain.
Season typically runs mid-December through early April, with Bridger known for reliable, high-quality snow thanks to its ridge-top location. Tickets can sell out on powder days, so buying online ahead of time is worth it if you're planning around a storm.
The mountain at a glance
Distance: 16 miles up Bridger Canyon Road from Bozeman.
Terrain: About 2,000 lift-served acres. Roughly a quarter is beginner, a third intermediate, and the rest advanced or expert.
Hours: Lifts usually run 9 am to 4 pm.
The Ridge: Reached from the Schlasman's lift. Anyone going to the Ridge must carry an avalanche transceiver. A shovel and a partner are strongly recommended.
Tickets and lessons
Every guest needs a Bridger Bowl Card, even returning skiers. The first card is free. Lift tickets bought online are usually cheaper than at the window. Private and group lessons run daily, and the First Tracks program is for ages 4 to 6. Mountain Hosts give free tours from the base of the Sunnyside chairlift.
Take the bus
For a first visit, we say take the free shuttle. Parking at the mountain is a dirt lot, and you end up walking uphill to the lodge. The shuttle skips all of that. It runs from the MSU Student Union Building and from the Park N Ride lot at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds. Check the Bridger Bowl app for the current schedule.
After the lifts
Locals end the day at the Griz. It is a separate building on Bridger Bowl property, not part of the ski area, and it is open whenever the mountain is. Mostly beer, a little food, and a spot outside by a fire. Kids get the hot cocoa, piled high with whipped cream and sprinkles.
