Hyalite Canyon

Hyalite Canyon is the closest year-round outdoor playground to Bozeman, about a 30-minute drive up into the Gallatin National Forest. It's the go-to spot for locals, which tells you something.

In summer, hike to Hyalite's waterfalls (there are more than a dozen along the canyon), rent a kayak or paddleboard on Hyalite Reservoir, or fish for trout. In winter, the same canyon turns into one of the best ice climbing destinations in the Lower 48, drawing climbers from all over the country.

The road is paved and easy to drive most of the year, though snow tires or four-wheel drive are worth having in winter. No entrance fee, just a small parking fee at some trailheads, making it one of the best value outings near Bozeman.
